About Women Empowerment

Women Empowerment is part of the Partnership for Change Conference 2012, which focuses mainly on Dignity and Empowerment, with a special focus on women. The Nobel Women’s Initiative and The Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights are the main organizing partners of the conference.

We want to contribute to cooperation between individuals, organizations, businesses and authorities in order to highlight women’s and girls’ realities, as well as to secure their dignity and rights.

On 19. October 2011, a workshop on Women Empowerment was held at Litteraturhuset in order to highlight the concern of sexual violence committed against women as a weapon of war. Organized as panel debates and world cafes, the situation was discussed and various solutions presented.

On 27. October 2011, Strange News was performed in the Oslo Concert Hall, a multimedia production consisting of an orchestra, videos and sound, drawing attention to child soldiers in Africa.

On 15. November 2011, a sequel workshop will be arranged in the wake of Strange News. The focus of the event will be on how to raise awareness around the issue of child soldiers, as well as how to transform good intentions and ideas into concrete actions. As a starting point, our project Hope in Action (HiA) will present their procedure of child support, job training and business planning. The workshop will take shape as a dialogue between representatives from private businesses, the authorities, the arts, finance and students. Among the contributors are HiA leader Dan Andersson, composer Rolf Wallin and the world known photographer Marcus Bleasdale.

On 18. March 2012, an Awareness Event is arranged in Folketeateret in Oslo – called Women carry half the sky with focus on sexual violence as a weapon of war. The film “From this day to where” from Congo will be shown, which was produced exclusively for this event. This piece of art introduces us to the struggle of a Congolese woman, a struggle against the absurd injustice surrounding her, and her daily effort of helping the victims back to a worthy life. Among the event contributors are well known Norwegian artists and commentators.

The Nobel Women’s Initiative has together with other central international collaborators declared the fight against sexual violence as an issue of top priority. We seek to unite our efforts with these contributors and together achieve an end to these crimes.
